This is the story of two young people being brought up in Europe at the start of WW2 – Marie- Laure in France; and Werner, in Germany. At the age of 6 Marie-Laure loses her sight and has to learn to navigate her world, with the ingenious help of her father.
Werner, meanwhile, displays a prodigious skill for working with radio – a precious talent during wartime – a war which takes them away from their homes, she to Saint Malo on the Coast where he arrives eventually, via Russia, and at which point their lives inevitably intersect. I cannot possibly do this book justice.
Every word is placed with care and every single chapter is a thing of beauty in its own right. I was apprehensive – there are so many stories of war, did I really want to read another one? But the answer is an unequivocal yes – I do and I did, and now I just want to start at the beginning all over again.
